Imagine living where you won't hear the telephone ring once in two years... Removing your watch for there's no need to know what time it is... Tossing your ATM card for, human resources, not money is the currency in this world.
Michael Modzelewski decided to risk* it all; change his life completely by dropping out of a comfortable middle class existence to live on a wilderness island in the Inside Passage to Alaska. Having only been camping twice before (and always with a pay phone nearby to call home if he got in trouble), Michael soon discovered that he was 20,000 leagues in over his head.
Why the Wilderness/Nature? What relevance does it have in this era of fast-paced, high-tech urbanity? "Out in Nature is where, we as humans, slowly developed our finest qualities of compassion, cooperation and wonderment," Michael states. "On the Evolutionary time-frame, if Creation was compressed into one week -- we've only moved into cities in the last 'two minutes'... And even our high-powered computers are based in Nature -- made from dirt: sand for silicon chips..." Michael returns to the Source, where, as the poet Gary Snyder wrote: "The outward equivalent of the subconscious is the wilderness."
How he survived, then thrived in this world is an inspiring story of an 'Inside Passage,' a re-education with the powers and depths of the human soul.
